Our Philosophy
RECOVERY IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION
Addiction is an infinitely complex maze within which all aspects of a person’s life are transformed. An addict can wander into his maze through multiple pathways, and yet each pathway seems to pull the pilgrim in deeper. It may seem as if the addict wandered into the magical world, but once in, becomes lost amidst the portions and poisons and pleasure and pain.
To survive in this predatory world of twists and turns that lead nowhere, the addict becomes a chameleon and develops many faces- a mask to fit each particular drama within the maze. Masks are created moment by moment in response to the threats and opportunities presented.
Any masks, any path, any line will emerge that will allow the addict to sustain the drug relationship and continue on the journey through the maze.
Addiction is a way of life, a means of organising one’s daily existence, and a way of talking, walking, dressing, gesturing, believing, working, playing, thinking and seeing, that separates people who are” in the life” to those who are not.
Sooner or later every addict arrives at the point where life seems to have become too big to really cope with. Life is never really too much, but for the person who is caught in the web of addiction it can seem to be. When this happens, the addict needs to reconsider self-defeating and self-rejecting behaviour. The addict often loses perspective but it can be restored.
Our philosophy at SANCA DURBAN is that chemical dependence is a medically recognised illness with physical, psychological, social, cognitive and spiritual components in its origin and development.
Chemical dependency cannot be viewed as a ‘ habit’ or a ‘willpower’ problem. It is a physical disease similar to cancer and heart disease in that it is chronic and must be managed. Some people have a genetic predisposition to develop the illness, and that together with certain environmental stressors will give rise to, or tigger off this condition of chemical dependency.
We know that most chemically dependent persons can be treated successfully and can return to their role of responsible members of the community, which the majority of them filled, before the onset of their chemical dependence.
We help people with substance abuse addictions to achieve necessary self-awareness, self- worth and self- confidence for acquiring a chemical free life style.
